Boiler Breakdown? 6 Things to Check Before You Call an Engineer

A cold house and no hot water is stressful, especially with a callout fee on the line. Before you book an engineer, there are a handful of quick, safe checks worth running through — some boiler "faults" turn out to be something you can fix yourself in two minutes.

1. Check the pressure gauge

Most modern boilers need pressure between 1 and 1.5 bar to run. If it's dropped below 1, most boilers have a simple filling loop you can use to top it back up — check your manual, as the process is usually just turning a valve or two until the gauge reads correctly.

2. Check for a frozen condensate pipe

In cold weather, the external plastic condensate pipe can freeze and trip the boiler out on a fault code. If you can see it running outside and it's iced up, gently warming it with a warm (not boiling) water-soaked cloth can sometimes solve it in minutes.

3. Check your thermostat settings and batteries

It sounds obvious, but a thermostat set below room temperature, on the wrong schedule, or with dead batteries is one of the most common call-outs we attend. Check the display is on, the time and temperature are correct, and swap the batteries if it looks dim or blank.

4. Check your prepayment gas meter

If you're on a prepayment meter, a "boiler breakdown" is sometimes just the meter running low or in emergency credit mode. Worth a quick check before anything else.

5. Check the fuse and any RCD/trip switch

Boilers run off mains electricity for their controls even though they burn gas or oil. Check the fused spur switch near the boiler is on, and check your consumer unit for a tripped switch or blown fuse.

6. Look for an error code on the display

Most modern boilers display a fault code when something's wrong. Note it down (and take a photo) — it tells an engineer roughly what's happening before they even arrive, which usually means a faster, more accurate fix on the first visit.

When to stop and call a Gas Safe engineer

None of the above involves opening the boiler casing or touching anything gas-related — and that's deliberate. If you smell gas, see a yellow or orange flame instead of blue, notice soot or staining around the boiler, or the checks above don't fix it, stop and call a Gas Safe registered engineer. It's illegal — and dangerous — for anyone who isn't Gas Safe registered to work on a gas boiler.
